Instruction

The Cameron Highlanders Pipe Band is a non-profit organization that is committed to serving the San Diego community. As part of our band’s charter, we offer free instruction to those who wish to learn to play the bagpipes or drums every Wednesday evening from 6:30-7:30 —no prior experience required!   Our next class will begin on Jan. 8, 2025.

Helix High School
7323 University Ave
La Mesa, CA 91941

The band currently rehearses in the 1300 building. (#14 on the map below)    To get to the 1300 building from University Ave., turn onto Yale Ave. and immediately turn left, followed by an immediate right turn at the Y-split. This road will take you up to a faculty parking lot that is adjacent to the  new cafeteria.   You are allowed to park in the faculty lot during our practices.

All that is needed for a beginning piper is a “practice chanter”. This learning instrument is available at our Wednesday night classes. The price is $50.00.  Also a College of Piping booklet which costs $40 . After that small investment, all you need to invest is your time until you are ready to make the next move to the bagpipes.

Drummers may also purchase drum sticks at our Wednesday night classes. You may need to get your own drum pad from another source.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to attend. We have students ranging in age from 8 to 70 years old or more! Girls, boys, women, and men are all encouraged to learn. It is never too late to give it a try, but of course, the earlier the better! Come on out any Wednesday and give it a go!

For more advanced players who are ready to join one of our pipe bands, please see our Competition band page.
